
Kozhikode or Calicut situated in the south Indian state of Kerala on the southwest coast of the Arabian Sea was erstwhile know as Malabar. The district extends from latitude 11°15' N to 75°49' E. Calicut boast of real idyllic setting of the serene Arabian Sea on the west and mesmeric peaks of the Wayanad hills on the east, this district has all the required ingredients to fascinate any medical tourist.

Calicut has a history of being world famous for spice trade, historic ship building and timber industry and a major center of trade between Kerala and the outside world. The city of Calicut came into existence in the 13th century when Udaiyavar, the king of Ernad, conquered the area around Ponniankar and built a fort at a place called Velapuram, now known as Calicut. Interestingly, the name Calicut is derived from 'calico,' the fine variety of hand-woven cotton cloth said to have originated from this place.
The Past: In northern Kerala lies the area, which the legendary traveller Marco Polo described in 1320 A.D. as the ''great province of Malabar.'' Much of this richness today lies buried in the glory of a past grandeur, a past replete with the trading visits of European voyagers calling on the ancient port of Calicut (Kozhikode) on their regular journeys of commerce, lured by timber, ivory, pepper, ginger, cinnamon and other spices.
The Arab Traveller Abdur Razzak also praised Calicut (Kozhikode) commercial glory in 1443 A.D.: ''Calicut (Kozhikode) is a perfectly secured harbour, which, like that of Ormuz, brings together merchants from every city and from every country.''
Once the capital of the powerful Zamorins and a prominent trade and commerce center, Calicut (Kozhikode) was the most important region of Malabar in the days gone by. Today, lush green country sides, serene beaches, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, hills, a unique culture and a warm, friendly ambience make Calicut (Kozhikode) a popular destination.
The outer world came to know about India in 1498 when Vasco da Gama came to Calicut and obtained permission to carry out trade from here. Vasco Da Gama found the place in 1498, when his portages navigator discovered the same accidentally. This historical landing of Vasco da Gama with his team of 170 men and 3 sailors is epicted by the construction of a monument that commemorates the arrival.
Quickly in succession came the English and Dutch. Disputes over the control of Calicut continued for a long time until 1792, when the East India Company went into an agreement with the local Zamori rulers to directly administer this area. Kerala was declared a state in 1956, and Calicut today is one of the most important centers of trade and business in this progressive state.
Kozhikode today boasts of is beautiful beaches, which are Beypore and Kozhikode. For history lovers, Kozhikode is a home to many historical moments and museums like Krishna Menon, Pazhassirajah. The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is yet another treat for nature lovers. For religious people, Kozhikode has the Tali Temple and the Jama-at-palli.
Kozhikode is described as the trading centre for many spices and commodities. These majorly include coffee, coconut, pepper, lemon grass, oil and rubber amongst all others.
